ST MATTHEW LUTHERAN CHURCH
Brief Church History
- Saint Matthew Church was the third Lutheran congregation established in Hocking County. It held its services in a log structure, originally built as a jail and later used as a school, which stood at the southwest corner of Hunter and Walnut Streets. In 1864 the congration purchased the building on West Second Street which earlier had been the Methodist Church and had later served another decade as one of Logan's early schools. In 1869 the Saint Matthew parish bought a church, previously buildt but then unused, on the site of its present structure. In 1877 the adjacent lot, at the corner of Hunter and Orchard Streets, was purchased for a parsonage;. in 1960 this gave way to an addition to the church facility. Saint Matthew originally was identified as German Lutheran. It has had a long and progressive part in building Logan's morality and culture
